1998: Exit polls verdict was 214 to 249 seats for the NDA while the Congress led alliance was predicted to win 145-164 seats. The NDA won 252 while the Congress got 166 seats in the Lok Sabha election.
Big Failure in Exit Polls
In 2004, the "India Shining" Lok Sabha election saw all the exit polls go wrong in gauging the people’s mood. All the exit polls predicted return of the Vajpayee government with half of them awarding simple majority to the NDA.
NDA managed only 189 seats and the Congress-led coalition won 222 and ran a government first with the support of the Left and then the Samajwadi Party and the Bahujan Samaj Party.
