Cartoonist Chandi Lahiri is Dead



Eminent cartoonist and author Chandi Lahiri is no more. Chandi Lahiri died at R G Kar Hospital today. He was 87.

Health of Chandi Lahiri was not good since last few days. He was admitted to the R G Kar Hospital two days ago with pneumonia and the end came today (18 January 2018) at about 01.50 PM. Chandi Lahiri  is survived by his wife and daughter.

Chandi Lahiri's cartoons reflected the socio-political situation in West Bengal and the entire country for over 50 years. Chandi Babu's cartoons were viewed in various newspapers, including in a leading vernacular daily here.

Chandi Lahiri was born at Nabadwip (Nadia district) on 16 March 1931. At the age of 13, Chandi Lahiri was involved in political movements. Chandi Lahiri took admission in 1947 and joined leading Bengali daily Ananda Bazar Patrika as cartoonist. Chandi Babu worked there for 20 years.

Chandi Lahiri had also penned several books on cartoons, including 'Bangla Cartooner Itihas' (History of cartoons in Bengal).
