With the development of Tea Industry in Assam, workers from Odisha, undivided Bihar, undivided Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh reached the state for job. Gradually these people mixed up with Assamese culture and they are known as "Tea Tribes".
Tea Tribes celebrate many festivals but still they observe Karam Puja as their main festival. Karam puja is observed on the night of Bhado Ekadasi (August). Karam Puja is agriculture related festival and the tribes pray to God Karam for better production of crops and safety from evil forces.
The Tea Tribes dance in the night of Karam Puja with ‘Dhol’ and ‘Madal’ and the dance is known as Jhumair Nritya.
In Dooars and Terai of North Bengal, the tribals celebrate Karam Puja.
