Ganga Sagar Mela is a special yearly religious gathering of Hindu pilgrims from different parts of the country. It is also known as Ganga Sagar Yatra or Ganga Snan. Every year during Makar Sankranti, Hindu pilgrims gather at Sagar Island or Sagardwip in West Bengal to take holy dip in River Ganga before it merges in the Bay of Bengal. Ganga Sagar mela stars a couple of days before Makar Sankranti. Thousands of Hindus from different states and even from foreign countries come to Ganga Sagar mela premises during that period. West Bengal state government takes many safety measures to maintain law and order situation of this area during Ganag Sagar mela days. Last year number of state ministers were deployed at the Ganga Sagar mela area during the Ganga Sagar mela days to look after the arrangements taken by state government. Arrangement for medical facilities are done by State Government and different NGOs during Ganga Sagar mela. This year also such arrangements will be done.

Every year Eastern Railway announces special trains for Ganga sagar Mela 2013. This year also such special trains will be announced.
Pilgrims can reach Ganga Sagar mela premises via direct buses available from Babu Ghat and Taratola. Pilgrims have to get down from buses at Harwood point or Namkhana and from those spots WBSTC operated ferry services will be available.
Many lodges, ashrams, dharmashalas and hotels are available for staying at Sagar Island or Sagardwip. Bharat Sevashram Sangha ashram provides free accommodation and food to pilgrims during Ganga Sagar mela days. There is a State Youth Hostel and booking can be done from Kolkata.
