Victoria Memorial – a landmark of Kolkata in West Bengal

Victoria Memorial or Victoria Memorial Hall is located at Maidan, heart of Kolkata in West Bengal.

History of Victoria Memorial


Queen Victoria died in January of 1901. Lord Curzon was the viceroy of India at that time. He raised the proposal of setting a suitable memorial of the Queen here in India. At that time Kolkata was the capital of India so it was chosen as the location for the memorial.  Lord Curzon appealed for fund to countrymen and the entire fund for construction of the memorial, Rs. One crore and five lakhs was collected from subscription.


Foundation stone was laid on 4rth January 1906 by the Prince of Wales and on 21st December, 1921, the Memorial was opened for public by The Duke of Windsor. Architect Sir William Emerson designed the structure of the memorial and the design of the structure represents British and Mughal architecture. Victoria Memorial Hall was inaugurated in the year 1921. Size of Victoria Memorial is 338 feet by 228 feet by 184 feet.

The museum in Victoria Memorial contains a large collection of memorable items related to Queen Victoria and the British rulers in India. Pictures of Kolkata of that time demonstrate how Kolkata was during the British Raj. One can view the arms used in the Battle of Plassey. Many items with historical values like Ivory chair used by Warren Hastings, medal awarded to Prince Dwarkanath Tagore by Queen Victoria are kept in the museum.

The Royal Gallery in Victoria Memorial contains Queen Victoria's Statues, portraits of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert and number of paintings which illustrate their lives.

The Victoria Memorial Garden attracts both young and old. The beautiful garden in Victoria Memorial is an ideal place for both young and old. All generation of people utilize the garden of Victoria Memorial for either morning walk, jogging or relaxation.


Admission Fee of Victoria Memorial: Rs. 10.00 for Indian citizens and RS. 150.00 for foreigners.

Nearest Metro Station: Maidan

One can reach Victoria Memorial by all buses passing through Maidan.
