Jaldapara Wildlife Sanctuary is located in Alipurduar sub division of Jalpaiguri district in Paschimbanga. Main tourist attraction of this sanctuary is one-horned rhinoceros. This sanctuary is the second largest home of rhinoceros in India, the first being the Kaziranga National Park in Assam.
Flora and fauna
The forest is covered with tall grasses. The main attraction of the sanctuary is definitely one-horned rhinoceros but other animals like Royal Bengal Tiger, elephants, barking deer, spotted deer, hog deer, wild pig, bisons, sambhar are found in the forest. Different species of birds also attract tourists in Jaldapara. Bengal Florican, a rare species of bird can be seen in Jaldapara. The other birds which can be seen in Jaldapara are Crested Eagle, Pallas's Fishing Eagle, shikra, Jungle fowl, peafowl, patridges, lesser Pied Hornbill and many more.
Python, monitor lizards, kraits, cobras, geckos are also found here.
Jaldapara Wildlife Sanctuary remains closed for 3 months in every year. During rainy season, from 15th June to 14th September, Jaldapara Wildlife Sanctuary remains closed and in the other months it remains open for visitors.
How to reach Jaldapara-transport services
From New Jalpaiguri catch any trains moving towards Alipurduar. The station where to get down is Hashimara. From Hashimara, madarihat is 10 kms. away and it is the entrance of Jaldapara Wildlife Sanctuary
. From Hashimara buses, autos, taxis are available.
