Badal Sarkar, the famous playwriter and director of theatre died on 13 May 2011, Friday at his residence at North Kolkata.
Badal Sarkar was a theatre dedicated personality known for his anti-establishment plays and experimental works on Indian theatre. He worked towards the spread of theatre to mass audiences. Badal Sarkar is a pioneer figure in street theatre and contemporary Bengali theatre.
Apart from Ebong Indrajit and Pagla Ghoda, two master pieces of Bada Sarkar some of the best known plays are 'Basi Khabar', 'Baaki Itihaas', 'Tringsha Shatabdi', 'Pagla Ghoda', 'Spartacus', 'Juloos', 'Bhoma' and 'Solution X'.
Badal Sarkar was influenced by eminent theatre personaities like Joan Littlewood, Anthony Serchio, Richard Schechner, Jerzy Grotoswki.
In 1976, he founded Shatabdi, his own theatre company.
