Lal Dighi - one of the heritage locations in Kolkata


This article is on Lal Dighi, one of the most important landmarks in Kolkata.

Lal Dighi is located at B.B.D.Bagh. Previously it was known as Dalhousie Square Tank. B.B.D. Bagh was known as Dalhousie square in earlier days.  Lal Dighi is a landmark place in Kolkata and it is surrounded by different administrative and commercial buildings. Some of those important buildings are:

Why the name is Lal Dighi


There are different stories behind the name of Lal Dighi. Some says that during dol utsav the water of the lake became red due to colours of dol and from this event the name became Lal Dighi. The other story is that reflection red light of the old fort on the lake was the reason behind such name. There is another story which says that Lalchand Basak had dug the pond became popular as Lal Dighi.
