Asansol is famous for coal mines and industries. It is one of the busiest commercial centres in India. Asansol is located at the western end of West Bengal, at the border of West Bengal and Jharkhand. Due to many coal mines in this area and hard working labours from adjacent state, industrial growth at Asansol was possible. In recent past, Asansol lost its glamour as many industries in this area were either sick or closed.
The largest employment in this area is from Eastern Coalfields, a subsidiary of Coal India Ltd. And IISCO Steel Plant of SAIL. The other major employers in this area are Chittaranjan Locomotive Works, Hindustan Cables Ltd., Disergarh Power Supply, DVC, Burn standard (Wagon factory), Reckitt and Coleman and number of cement factories.
Once there was a famous cycle factory in Kanyapurin Asansol. The Sen-Raleigh cycle factory was very popular for its different brand of cycles. Today the industry is closed. Hindustan Pilkington Glass factory , near B.B.College in Asansol was once very popular for its quality of glass. The factory is closed today. The ruined factory building can be seen from the G.T.Road.
