This institute was set up in 1919 and the name of the institute was Calcutta Research Tannery at that time. In 1926 the institute's name was changed to Bengal Tanning Institute. In 1955, the institute introduce B.Sc. (Tech) course in Leather Technology under University of Calcutta. In 1958 the name of the institute was again changed to College of Leather Technology.
From 1999-2000 this college started courses on B.Tech. in Information Technology and in the next session B.Tech. in Computer Science & Technology was started and again the name of the institute changed to Government College of Engineering & Leather Technology.
Being a government Engineering College, this institute has all the infrastructure required for running an engineering college.
