The secretariat building of the State Government of West Bengal, the Writer’s Building is located in B.B.D Bagh, Kolkata, West Bengal. Bengali people call Writer’s Building as Mahakaran. Designed by Thomas Lyon in 1780, the building serves for writers , means clerks of the British East India Company. It was constructed in the Neo Renaissance Style with a statue of Britannia at the top of the main entrance. At the place called Lal Dighi in BBD Bagh area the building stands, in the northern side of a water body. It is of great political significance and holds the memories of the Indian Independence Movement. Presently the building serves as the Chief Minister’s Office and secretariat.
