Sriniketan is a town in Bolpur subdivision of Birbhum district just 3 km from Santiniketan. Rural beauty is very much present here at Sriniketan. Rabindranath Tagore set up the Institute of Rural Reconstruction at Sriniketan in 1922. Sriniketan is the second campus of Visva Bharati which was started with an aim of upliftment of rural life of neighbouring villages. At that time Rabindranath Tagore felt the need of rural education program, both formal and non-formal among village children which can be utilized for the welfare of village community. The Loka-Siksha Samsad was started in 1936 to educate the poor villagers with non-formal education who had no access to usual educational opportunities. Siksha Charcha was established in 1937 to train village school teachers. In 1963, an agricultural college and in 1977 Rural Research Centre were set up in Sriniketan.
