History of Tipu Sultan Mosque
Named after Tipu Sultan, Tipu Sultan Mosque was built in 1842 by the youngest son of Tipu Sultan, Prince Gulam Mohammad. Tipu Sultan Mosque withstood the changes of Kolkata in various fields. Tipu Sultan Mosque is administered by His Holiness Shahi Islam. The expenses of Tipu Sultan Mosque are borne out of the fund raised from the rents of the property the mosque holds In Kolkata. Commonly known as Shahi Masjid, Tipu Sultan Mosque is governed by Tipu Sultan Shahi Masjid Protection and welfare Committee. The Committee has been working for the welfare of mankind without discriminating between the caste, creed and religion. The Committee once made five days of hunger strike for protesting against the destruction of a Hindu temple and a Muslim Dargah in Vadodara.
Architecture of Tipu Sultan Mosque
Tipu Sultan Mosque is one of the Islamic shrines of the Muslims in Kolkata. Tipu Sultan Mosque is built in the Islamic or Mughal style. Imamat and Namaaz are held here. Tipu Sultan Mosque is multi-domed having minarets, arcaded windows and a large prayer hall. It can occupy more than thousand persons. People of all the religion come to visit Tipu Sultan Mosque and take photos of its magnificent architecture.
Future plans of Tipu Sultan Mosque
The Tipu Sultan Shahi Masjid Protection & Welfare Committee aims at influencing people about the causes due to which the Masjid got damaged. The Committee negotiated the Kolkata Metro authority for repairing the damages it caused due to the construction of underground railways. The authority agreed to pay for the damages and also re-built the damaged part.
