Howrah Bridge - the wonder of West Bengal


The Howrah Bridge on the Hooghly River in West Bengal is originally called the New Howrah Bridge as it links Howrah to Kolkata. It was named after famous Rabindranath Tagore as the Rabindra Setu, though popularly known as the Howrah Bridge. It is one of the four well known bridges in west Bengal, the other three are- Vidyasagar Setu, Nevedita Setu and Vivekanda Setu.

The Howrah Bridge is regarded as the sixth longest bridgeof its type in the world. The twin cities Kolkata and Howrah are separated by the Hooghly River connected with the common link the Howrah Bridge. Kolkata has developed into a modern metropolitan city while Howrah progressed due to its industrial satellite. The Howrah Railway Station was built in the year 1906. Electricity is provided for the convenient passing of passenger, vehicles and pedestrians. The bridge contributes to its commercial importance.


The construction of the Howrah bridge was postponed due to the outbreak of The First World War. For the magnificent construction of the bridge the British firm viz. the Cleveland Bridge and Engineering Company Ltd. Were awarded. The bridge got constructed during The Second World War under tension and war pressures.


Rabindra Setu is a cantilever bridge with central span 1500 ft between main towers. The roadway below the tower is supported on the ground leaving anchor arm free from deck loads.

The maintenance and repair work the responsibility of the Kolkata Port Trust.
