History of Town Hall in Kolkata
The Town Hall was designed by col. John Garstin in 1811 and it is administered by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation. It is a place of historical importance where famous conferences and public meetings were held. It was built in Roman-Dorie style in order to make it a place for social gathering of Europeans. The public were not allowed to visit the upper storey. They could only visit the statues and beautiful paintings in ground floor. In 1897 in the Hall were partly renovated.
Present utilisation of Town Hall
Today the Town Hall has been restored in its previous form. Recently Kolkata Museum has added a library and an Archive. Nowadays a Municipal Court and a government food-rationing department are set up in the Town Hall. Articles have been written for neglecting the heritage which included the garden outside. Memories get revived by seeing the grand stairs, old iron lamp brackets, remnants of chandeliers and so on. It is hoped that it may regain its heritage as serious measures have been taken by the State Government upon its renovation and to restore its national heritage.
