Sagar Island or Gangasagar of Bay of Bengal is a large island with 43 villages. Gangasagar is a famous Hindu pilgrim spot. Kapil Muni Temple at Gangasagar is very famous and every year during Makar Sankranti, thousands of Hindus gather from the state and o+ther states to take a holy dip in the confluence of Ganga and Bay of Bengal. 



How to reach Gangasagar – transport services



One has to reach either Harwood point or Namkhana jetty and from there Sagar island can be reached by ferry services. Ferry services in both Harwood point and Namkhana and controlled by West Bengal Surface Transport Corporation. After completion of journey by steamer, again travel by vehicle, buses and jeeps are available. 



Harwood point or Namkhana jetty are connected with Kolkata by bus services, both state buses and private luxury buses ply between Kolkata and the points. During sagar mela, buses are available from Babughat, Howrah railway station and Taratola also. 


Sealdah railway station and Kakdwip are connected by Indian railway. From Kakdwip, Harwood Point is 5 Km. and Namkhana is 12 Km.

State Youth Hostel:  Double bed rooms are available here and advance booking can be done in Directorate of Youth Services, 32/1, B.B.D. Bag (South), Calcutta - 700001. Phone number: +91-33 2248 0626. 


Bharat Sevashram Sangha: Normally free of charge but during Sagar mela, getting accommodation here is very tough. 


Larica Sagar: A Tourist Lodge at Sagar Island. For advance booking can contact at telephone number:+91 3210 240226-227.
