Furfura Sharif is situated in a village in Jangipara Community developer block of Sreerampore, Hooghly District, West Bengal. This holy place for Muslims was built in 1375 by Muqlish Khan to serve Muslim pilgrims especially during Pir’s Mela. Pilgrims come in large numbers in the Urs festival.
Here Muslims are treated as Ashrafs whose ancestors invaded Bengal in the 14th century. The tomb of Mazaar Sharif and his five sons called the Panch Huzur Keblah is one of the important places in the mosque.
The founder of Furfura Sharif, Sufi saint Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddique was a religious preacher and also a religious reformer of that time. Here he built Madrasa with free boarding facilities for the unprivileged students. Female students were encouraged by setting up a school for the girls. His eldest son Qayum-e-Jaman Abdul Hai Siddique involved himself in social work and founded Islamic journal “Neda-e-Islam”. The second son Mufti-e-Azam Abu Zafar Siddique was a famous Islamic scholar and writer of his time and wrote books on religion. Mujahid-e-Millat Abdul Qader Siddique contributed his life to the welfare of downtrodden and poor people. His forth son Sultanul Arefin Najmus Saadat Siddique was also a social worker. Sultanul Waizin Zulfiker Ali Siddique the youngest son was a social reformer and also a preacher.
How to reach Furfura Sharif – transport services
The Furfura Sharif can be reached by taking Howrah-Burdwan Chord line Train and getting down at Balarmbati Railway Station, where buses and trekkers will take to the mosque. Buses are also available from Kolkata, Arambagh, Bishnupur and Bankura which go via Seakhala.
