Dakshineswar Kali Temple – the famous pilgrimage spot in West Bengal


Dakshineswar Kali Temple is such a place that every Bengalis from remote areas of West Bengal dreams of visiting this Kali temple for at least one time. History of the Dakshineswar Kali Temple


Founded by Rani Rashmoni, the Dakshineswar Temple was built in 1855 and located in Dakshineshwar, Kolkata. It is in the Eastern Bank of River Hoogly and “Bhavatarini”, i.e. Goddess Kali is its presiding deity. Rani Rashmoni had built the temple so the pilgrims of all castes and religions could offer prayers to the Goddess.

The three-storied south-facing temple has nine spires as built in the traditional Nava-Ratna style of Bengali architecture and stands on a platform with a plight of stairs. Goddess Kali stands on the chest of Lord Shiva and the idols are placed in the Garbha Griha. There are twelve identical Shiva temples built in “Aat-chala” style of Bengali architecture on the either side on the ghat of Hoogly River. The Vishnu Temple or Radha Kanta Temple is built in the north-east direction in the temple complex.

The Road to the west of Dakshineshwar Station, Gaji Tala Rani Rashmoni Road reaches to the Vivekananda Gateway of the Kali temple complex. Rani Rashmoni stayed in the ‘Kuthi Bari’, north of Ganga, which is close to Gaji tala. The temple complex consists of two Nahabat Khana Maa Sarada used to stay in a room just below the Nahabat Khana when she came to Dakshineshwar. The famous ghat ‘Chadni’ is the bank of River Ganga located between the series of Shiva Temples. ‘Panchabati’, Where Sri Ramakrishna spent 12 years of sadhana is to the North of Bakul Tala. Nat Mandir is another historical place near the Dakshineshwar temple. This is an open hall with roof and used for religious discussions and spiritual songs. Room of Sri Ramkrishna Deb is situated in the premises of Dakshineswar Kali Temple. Sri Ramkrishna Deb stayed in this room for the last 14 years of his life.

 How to reach Dakshineswar Kali Temple

One can reach to the temple by road or by river. The Barrackpore Road is the main link road to the place. Inter state and private buses serve as means of transport to go the place. The railway is also used to reach there.
