In 2016 West Bengal assembly election, Sovan Chottopadhyay of Trinamool Congress won Behala Purba assembly seat defeating his nearest rival Professor Ambikesh Mahapatra, an independent candidate. Sovan Chottopadhyay got 96,621 votes and Professor Ambikesh Mahapatra got 72,327 votes.
In 2011 West Bengal assembly election, Sovan Chottopadhyay of Trinamool Congress won Behala Purba assembly seat defeating his nearest rival Kumkum Chakraborty of CPI (M). Sovan Chottopadhyay got 116,709 votes, Kumkum Chakraborty got 68,536 votes and A. Biswajit Naidu of BJP got 3,692 votes.
