After Higher Secondary or ISC students have to decide what to study and why

Results of almost all medical and engineering entrance examinations are published and within few days general stream merit lists will be published. Students are now busy in deciding what would be the best stream to study, what are the prospectus and future of different courses? I am trying to give a comparative study of these questions in this article.

West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination Council has published more than 90,000 names in the merit list of engineering courses and 3,000 names for medical colleges in the state. With the increase in demand of engineering professionals (specially in IT sector), nearly 100 private engineering colleges are operating in our state. For the last few years all the seats of the engineering colleges are ultimately filled up by students and our state is producing huge number of engineers every year. Technical education from private engineering colleges has been started in large scale from the last decade in our state. Already few questions have been raised:

All the private engineering colleges are not capable of conducting engineering courses successfully. They can not provide quality education due to lack of competent faculties, proper infrastructure etc. Huge advertisement has glamorized the engineering courses and of course the present availability of job is another reason that a large number of meritorious students are joining engineering colleges.

Students with higher rank in WBJEE and joining in government engineering colleges should think twice before joining there. A good student does not need any job security or placement assistance. Students with excellent result have to question themselves ‘Am I Joining the engineering college due to guaranteed job at the end of final year or glamour is dragging me towards the engineering college?’ If the answer is yes then my suggestion will be that more glamour is waiting for them in general stream education. After a master degree he / she can go on even higher education and so many options are opened for them at that stage. Actually in general line education, the more qualifications you secure, more options are opened and at this stage the jobs are more glamorous than that of an engineer.

Students joining private engineering colleges are spending huge amount of money in the four years. Present IT market is pulling the job availability; it is not the case that most of the students are getting job with high salary on their own merit. In many private engineering colleges, students of Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and other streams are getting appointment in IT sectors. This helps the college in their advertisement that “we are capable of 100% placement” but this will not help the poor students. A student of Instrumentation Engineering will have to compete with Computer Engineers in working field and which will be a fight of unequal capacity.

In many cases it is also observed that a students with excellent result has joined government engineering or medical college due to simply glamour and guaranteed job but his or her aptitude is not in that field. This is the most pathetic situation and ultimately the candidate has to suffer life long due to wrong selection of stream. I again repeat that a good student never need job assistance or job security. For below average students, simply enrolling in private engineering colleges does not mean that they will become successful engineers after passing from these colleges.

In this article what I tried to tell that with the growth of Industry, more and more engineers are needed but students should take decision whether they are suitable for this line. If students feel that they have strong aptitude in engineering stream, then they can join engineering colleges after ensuring that the engineering college can provide quality teaching.
