Few words about Bethune College
The India’s first women’s college, Bethune College was set up in 1879, affiliated by the University of Kolkata and certified by NAAC. It was founded by John Elliot Drinkwater Bethune. It was set up as Hindu Female School which in 7th May 1849 came to be known as the Bethune School. The school was formed on the area gifted to the institution by Raja Dakshina Ranjan Mukherjee. The school was given an incentive due to combining with one of the leading schools of Kolkata, Banga Mahila Vidyalaya. Bethune College got affiliated in Feb 1888 from the University of Kolkata. It was set up so as to provide education to women in Bengal. The performance of the college in the Board Examinations was remarkable. It occupied the 2nd position after Presidency College. The top students were honoured with medals like Padmavati Gold Medal and Gangamani Debi Gold Medal for their excellent performance. The alumnae of the college contained many exceptionally talented women like, Sm. Kamini Roy, Sm. Sarala Devi Chaudhurani, Sm. Sita Devi, Santa Devi, Sm. Lila Roy, Chameli Basu, Ila Mitra, Pramila Gupta, and Kamala Dasgupta and so on.

Bethune College is situated opposite to Hedua, in the middle of North Kolkata. Buses and tram routes are available for going there. Underground Railway can also serve as a means of transport to reach there. It takes only five minutes of walking from Girish Park Metro Railway Station to the college.

The courses offered in Bethune College are – (a) Bachelor of Arts in English, Sanskrit, History and Philosophy, (b) Master of Science in Math, Biology and Botany, (c) Bachelor of Science in Math, Zoology, Botany and Chemistry, (d) Master of Commerce and (e) Bachelor of Commerce.
Facilities available in Bethune College
The infrastructural condition of Bethune College is well equipped with the adoption of modern techniques. Computers are provided as a means to help in education and to keep up to date records of the departments. Staffs are also provided with computers in the laboratory so as to help them keep information about the status and availability of books as and when they require. Classrooms of the college are modernized with various facilities. There was a high demand for building a separate library due to increased strength of student, increased number of books and library grants. The library was separated into Arts Library and Science Library. The laboratories contain modern tools of experiments. The candidates are provided National Science Scheme and cultural programs are also held.
